  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Eastham is a small Outer Cape town, about 5,500 residents, sitting between Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic. It is the gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore: Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Light Beach, the Salt Pond Visitor Center and the 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail all start or pass through here. It is a beach-and-bike base, not a sightseeing city, and it is only 3 miles wide, so you can watch sunrise over the ocean and sunset over the bay on the same day.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach beaches, trailheads and restaurants; Route 6 is the single main highway through town. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs the full length of Eastham and connects to Wellfleet and Orleans, with rentals at two shops on the trail. Regional buses (Plymouth & Brockton; the Flex) link Outer Cape towns and carry bikes, but service is limited — check timetables before relying on it.

Quieter, near the national seashore and marsh trails; few beds, book early.

Bay-side roads (Samoset, Massasoit, Herring Brook)

Cottages near First Encounter and the bay beaches; good for families, sunset walks.

Watch out

Safety

Eastham is a low-crime small town and generally safe for tourists. The real risks are ocean rip currents at the national seashore beaches, ticks on trails, summer heat, and deer on Route 6 at dusk — swim near lifeguards and check posted warnings.
  • Summer parking at town bay and pond beaches requires a permit for cars; national seashore lots fill by mid-morning.
  • Greenhead flies bite on marsh trails in summer; bring repellent and cover up.
  • Route 6 traffic backs up on summer weekends and holiday Mondays; plan around it.
  • Many restaurants and lodgings close or cut hours from November to April.
