Grassington is a small Wharfedale town of about 1,100 people, 8 miles north of Skipton, with a cobbled square, a folk museum and trailheads for the Dales Way and the limestone hills above the River Wharfe. There is no railway station and no local taxi, so you arrive by bus or car and walk everywhere once you are here. Two nights covers the town and one full hill day; one night works if you are passing through.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 10 minutes; the square is the main bus stop and the National Park Centre is a short walk up Hebden Road. There is no taxi based in Grassington, so a cab has to come from Skipton. For the fells, use OS Landranger 98 (Grassington and Upper Wharfedale) or 103 for the southern approaches.

A low-crime small town; the real risks are the fells (weather, navigation, slippery limestone), narrow roads with no pavement, and patchy phone signal.
  • No railway station and no local taxi: plan the last bus or drive.
  • Village pubs and cafés keep short hours and close early; eat before 21:00 or cook.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from EE, O2 and Three, no Vodafone coverage, no 5G (as of 2025).
  • Fell weather changes fast and paths are limestone and slippery when wet: carry a map, waterproofs and a charged phone.
  • Parking in the village fills on weekends and holidays; use the National Park Centre car park and walk in.
