The Moravian Karst is a limestone plateau north of Brno where the Punkva river sinks underground, cutting a 138 m-deep sinkhole at Macocha and a 35 km cave system behind it. It is a protected landscape area, not a national park, and it is small: the main sights sit in a triangle between Blansko, Sloup and Vilémovice, with the busiest stretch in the 14 km Punkevní údolí valley. Most visitors come for one guided cave tour and the gorge viewpoints; walkers and cyclists get the marked trails above the valley, which stay quiet even in August.

What are the best hikes in Moravian Karst?

The classic is Skalní Mlýn to the Punkva Caves and up to the Macocha rim, about 3.5 km each way with a steep final climb. The green-marked trail to the Blansek castle ruin above the cave entrance is a shorter forest loop. For a quiet half day, take the plateau paths around Sloup and the Sloup–Sošůvka cave.

When is the best time to visit Moravian Karst?

April, May, September and October: caves open daily, mild weather, manageable crowds. July and August are the busiest — book the Punkva Caves online and take the first tour of the day. From November to March most caves close and the gorge paths can be icy.

Can I visit the caves without a guide?

No. The main caves are locked and visited only on guided tours, with the guide included in the ticket price. You can walk into several small unnamed caves in the woods for free, but they are unlit and unmaintained.

Do I need a car for Moravian Karst?

No. Trains from Brno reach Blansko in about 30 minutes, and local buses run from Blansko to Skalní Mlýn and the Macocha stop. The valley road between Skalní Mlýn and the Punkva Caves is closed to cars anyway, so the last stretch is on foot.

How long do you need at Moravian Karst?

One full day covers the Punkva Caves tour and the Macocha rim. Two days let you add the northern caves at Sloup and Balcarka, the windmills and a longer walk or bike ride on the plateau.
