Veliky Ustyug is a merchant town of the Russian North, at the meeting point of the Sukhona and Yug rivers, with a dense set of 17th- and 18th-century churches in the northern Baroque style. It is hard to reach and seasonal: winter brings families to the Ded Moroz estate, summer brings people for the architecture and the rivers. Two nights covers the centre on foot; the estate needs its own half-day.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: cathedral courtyard, embankment and museums sit within about 20 minutes on foot. A few local bus routes run, paid to the driver, with route 1 linking the bus station (PATП) to the centre and the shipyard. Taxis cover the estate and the airport. In winter, ice and snow make pavements slow.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are distance, winter cold and road conditions, not crime. Keep your documents with you, follow your government's travel advice for Russia, and carry cash for buses and small museums.
  • The town is far from Moscow and the last road stretch from Chekshino is rough: allow a full day by car or take the train/bus combination.
  • Outside winter there is no direct train: you transfer at Kotlas or Yadrikha to bus or taxi.
  • The Ded Moroz estate is about 25 km out of town and needs a car, taxi or tour; check opening days in the low season.
  • The Trinity Monastery of Gledinsky is closed in winter.
  • Some churches are working parishes: dress modestly and check service times before going in.
