Drive the Asmara–Massawa escarpment road through the park in one day from Asmara: stop at Sabur viewpoint and Filfil forest, pay the 100 ERN entry fee at the gate, and go between December and February for the greenest forest; skip the long hikes unless you have a 4WD and a full day.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Eritrea ↗A visa must usually be arranged before travel through an Eritrean embassy or with a pre-approval letter obtained by a local agent (check); arrival without prior arrangements is generally not possible.
  • Eritrea ↗Foreign visitors need a free travel permit from the tourism office in Asmara for any trip outside the city; allow a working day and carry several photocopies for checkpoints.
  • Eritrea ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention for the lowlands and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
  • Eritrea ↗Foreign cards and ATMs do not work for visitors: bring the whole trip's budget in clean US dollars or euros, declare it on arrival and keep every official exchange receipt.

Semenawi Bahri National Park protects the northern Red Sea escarpment between Asmara and Massawa: a strip of evergreen forest, deep valleys and seasonal waterfalls. The park is crossed by the main road, so most visitors see it from a car. The forest is thickest in Filfil and Solomuna, where birdwatching is the main activity. The park has no visitor centre, no marked trails and no accommodation inside; it is a day trip from Asmara or a stop on the way to Massawa.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

  • The main road is paved and accessible by car; all viewpoints and pull-offs are roadside.
  • No wheelchair-accessible trails or facilities exist in the park.

Visiting lightly
