Give Berkhamsted one full day: castle ruins, canal towpath and Ashridge woods. Sleep in London or St Albans and come by train, 35–45 min from Euston.
Berkhamsted is a small Hertfordshire market town about 30 miles north of London, with a Norman castle ruin beside the station, a canal running through the centre and the Ashridge Estate woods on the ridge above. The High Street is flat and walkable end to end in under 20 minutes, so a day covers the castle, the church, the canal and a pub lunch, with a longer walk or the Bridgewater Monument if the weather holds. It works as a day trip from London rather than a base: hotels are few and priced for commuters, and the evening offer is pubs and one cinema.

Getting around
The centre is flat and small: the station to the far end of the High Street is under 15 minutes on foot. Local buses are run by Red Rose and Arriva and connect Tring, Hemel Hempstead and Aylesbury; plan with Intalink. For Ashridge, the Bridgewater Monument and Pitstone Windmill, take a taxi or drive — the walk up is steep and there is no useful bus.
