Belgrade is a small lake town in the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys, about 20 minutes northwest of Waterville. It is a base, not a sight list: the Great Pond and Long Pond chain, rented camps with private docks, and boat or floatplane access to the water. Two to three nights suits most trips; a week or more if you are renting a camp and settling in. A car is effectively required.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: roads are spread out and some are steep and unpaved, so a 4x4 or truck helps for the rougher ones. Rent a car if you arrive without one. Between lakes, a floatplane operates from Great Pond Marina and doubles as a way to see the lake chain from above. There is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are driving (moose at dawn and dusk, unpaved lake roads) and cold water. 911 works everywhere. Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads.
  • No car, no trip: distances between lakes and services are long and there is no visitor bus.
  • Some lake roads are unpaved and steep; check your rental's clearance before booking a remote camp.
  • Seasonal businesses: many camps, marinas and restaurants close from late autumn to spring.
  • Moose on the road at dawn and dusk, especially on Route 11 and Route 27.
  • Lake water stays cold even in July; life jackets are required for children on the water.
