Karlskrona is Sweden's only baroque naval city, built from 1680 on the island of Trossö, 5 km off the mainland. The old shipyard, the naval base and three churches are UNESCO-listed. The centre is walkable in a day; the islands and the Aspö ferry are what make a second day worth it. It is a stop on the Copenhagen–Malmö–Karlskrona rail line, not a first-trip headline.

Getting around

Trossö is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes. Local and regional buses cost roughly 20 kr a ride; the #6 bus links the ferry terminal on Verkö to the centre. Bikes rent for about 100 kr a day (170 kr for two days). Taxis are metered; TaxiKurir runs an app. Island ferries leave from the harbour near the Stumholmen bridge.

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold water and fast temperature drops on the islands, icy pavements in winter, and the alcohol rules: buy before Systembolaget closes.
  • Alcohol over 3.5% is sold only at Systembolaget, with limited hours and closed on Sundays.
  • Island cafés, the Aspö shops and summer ferries run Jun–Aug only; outside that, expect closures.
  • The naval base and parts of the shipyard are restricted: stay on marked paths and don't photograph through gates.
  • Winter days are short and icy; the archipelago boats mostly stop running.
