Kitimat is a small planned port town at the head of the Douglas Channel, built by Alcan in the 1950s around a Garden City street plan with about 45 km of walkways. It is a working industrial town, not a resort: the draw is fjord scenery, salmon fishing, a compact museum and the Rio Tinto smelter tour. Most travellers reach it from Terrace in about 40 minutes by car and use it as a one-night stop on the way north.

Getting around

Kitimat is spread out and the walkway network is the best way around the centre. BC Transit runs local routes daily at $2 cash fare (no change given); route 11 links Kitimat and Terrace Monday to Saturday, about 1 h 5 min–1 h 10 min. A car makes the hatchery, Moore Creek Falls and the smelter practical.

Watch out

Safety

Kitimat is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are weather, wildlife and isolation: rain gear, bear awareness on trails, and fuel before Highway 37.
  • Rio Tinto smelter tours run by reservation only, summer Fridays at 1PM: book ahead or you will not get in.
  • The Kitimat River Fish Hatchery is generally open Monday to Friday in summer and tours depend on staff: call before driving out.
  • Moore Creek Falls is best after rain and the path can be slick.
  • This is bear country: store food properly and make noise on trails.
  • Cell coverage is thin on Highway 37 outside town.
