Rules in force · 10Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Norway ↗Norway is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
  • Norway ↗Wine and spirits are sold only at the state Vinmonopolet shops; supermarkets sell beer, and not in the evenings or on Sundays.
  • Norway ↗The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you hike and camp on most uncultivated land, keeping a distance from homes and leaving no trace.
  • Svalbard ↗Outside settlements you must carry a rifle and know how to use it; most visitors join guided groups instead.
  • Svalbard ↗Svalbard has no border controls, but all scheduled flights leave from mainland Norway, so you pass Norwegian immigration first.
  • Svalbard ↗All man-made objects older than 1946 are protected; do not move or take artefacts.

Indre Wijdefjorden National Park protects the inner half of Wijdefjorden, Svalbard's longest fjord, cutting north into the island of Spitsbergen between steep, dry mountain walls. It was established in 2003 for conservation, not for visitors: there are no marked trails, no cabins, no campgrounds, no shops and no road in. Access is by expedition boat, and once ashore you are in true Arctic backcountry where polar bears are a real hazard and self-defence rules apply. The park's quiet draw is the fjord itself, the Arctic steppe plants of the inner valley, and the chance to walk a few wild beaches and tundra slopes in near-total solitude. Treat it as one segment of a longer Svalbard voyage, not a standalone destination.

Why go

  • The inner half of Svalbard's longest fjord, with mountain walls rising straight from the water.
  • Arctic steppe and tundra plants in the dry inner valley, unusual for Svalbard.
  • A few wild beaches and slopes where you can walk in genuine solitude.
  • Seen properly only from a boat, which is also how you get there.

Safety

Polar bears high

Stay with an armed guide, carry a rifle outside settlements, keep food sealed and never approach an animal.

Cold, wind and sudden weather high

Layered clothing, spare gloves, goggles; the fjord can turn rough fast.

No rescue nearby high

Travel with an operator that carries a satellite phone and insurance; self-rescue is the norm.

Landing on soft or icy ground medium

Wear boots with grip; shore landings are often wet and slippery.

Isolation and navigation high

There are no trails or markers; do not walk inland alone.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • There are no accessible facilities, paths or buildings in the park.
  • Boat-based viewing is the only option for visitors with limited mobility; shore landings involve wet, uneven ground.

Visiting lightly

  • Follow your operator's landing rules and keep group sizes small.
  • Keep distance from polar bears, seals and reindeer; do not feed or approach wildlife.
  • Take all waste back to the ship; nothing is collected in the park.
  • Do not collect plants, rocks or artefacts; the park exists for conservation.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Indre Wijdefjorden National Park?

Nothing. There is no entrance fee for Norwegian national parks. The real cost is getting there: a multi-day expedition boat from Longyearbyen, roughly 20,000–60,000 NOK per person (2026 estimate), plus gear and rifle hire.

What are the best hikes in Indre Wijdefjorden National Park?

There are no marked trails. The only realistic walking is on a few beaches along the fjord and short tundra slopes near landing sites. Anything inland, including the approach toward Newtontoppen, is serious backcountry travel for experienced, fully equipped parties.

When is the best time to visit Indre Wijdefjorden National Park?

June to August, when the fjord is largely ice-free, the midnight sun gives long light and expedition boats run. May can still be blocked by ice, and from October the polar night makes access impractical.

How do I get to Indre Wijdefjorden National Park?

By boat only. There is no road. Most visitors arrive on an expedition vessel from Longyearbyen, sailing north along the west coast and into the fjord; the trip takes one to two days each way.

Can I visit Indre Wijdefjorden National Park on my own?

Not realistically. There are no facilities, no trails and no rescue nearby, and you must carry a rifle outside settlements because of polar bears. Independent travel here means a fully self-sufficient expedition.

Is there anywhere to stay in the park?

No. There are no lodgings, cabins or campgrounds in the park. You sleep on your expedition vessel or base yourself in Longyearbyen before and after the voyage.
