Karesuvanto is a 150-person village in Enontekiö, Finnish Lapland, on the Muoniojoki river. Across the bridge is Karesuando in Sweden — the northernmost car border crossing between the two countries. There is no airport, no train and few sights; the reason to come is the wilderness around it (Tarvantovaara, Lätäseno, Käsivarsi) and the E8/E45 road junction. Most travellers pass through, cross the border or use it as a canoe and hiking base.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk; a bike or car helps for sights and trailheads outside it. There are few roads, so for the wilderness you need skis, a snowmobile, a canoe or hiking boots. The E8 runs through the village toward Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø; the E45 comes from Sweden and continues east. Buses run at least daily from Rovaniemi toward Kilpisjärvi, with summer-only extensions to Tromsø; Swedish buses from Kiruna stop on the Swedish side and do not connect with the Finnish ones — allow a 1 km walk across the border.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by any normal measure; the real risks are wilderness exposure, bog terrain, sudden weather and long distances with thin services. Tell someone your route and carry a map, compass and warm layers.
  • This is northern wilderness: phone coverage is not guaranteed and snow is possible even in summer. Carry a map and compass even on short hikes.
  • Bogs off the marked routes are a real hazard; do not wander off without skill and gear.
  • Sweden is a different time zone (one hour behind Finland) and uses kronor, not euros — cards work, but check before assuming.
  • Services are thin outside summer; fuel, food and lodging options shrink in winter. Check opening before relying on them.
  • Distances are large: Hetta 65 km, Kilpisjärvi 109 km, Kiruna 180 km, Tromsø 271 km. Do not plan a same-day return to Tromsø.
