San Juan is a Batangas municipality whose coast at Laiya holds a strip of white-sand beach resorts, about 3–4 hours by road from Manila. The inland poblacion is a small grid of streets with a 19th-century church and a public market, and it is not where visitors sleep. Come for a resort weekend, a Mount Daguldul hike or a stop on the Batangas–Quezon coastal road, not for a sightseeing city.

Getting around

The poblacion is compact and walkable; tricycles are everywhere and cheap for short hops. Laiya is a separate coastal strip reached by a highway from Poblacion, so a car, van or tricycle ride is needed between the two. Buses from Manila and Batangas City stop in the town centre; jeepneys are cheaper but slow and thin outside daylight.

Watch out

Safety

Beach-resort area is calm and family-oriented; the real risks are road transfers after dark, strong currents, and petty theft of unattended bags on the sand. Use resort safes and agree tricycle fares before you ride.
  • Laiya resorts sit along one road: without your own vehicle or a booked transfer, moving between resorts is slow and costly.
  • Some beaches charge a day-use or environmental fee at the gate — check at your resort before you commit.
  • Typhoon season runs roughly Jul–Oct; ferries, flights and coastal roads can be disrupted at short notice.
  • Card payment is patchy outside bigger resorts; carry cash for tricycles, market stalls and fees.
  • Swim only where the resort marks a safe area; currents on Tayabas Bay can be strong.
