Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Boulogne-Billancourt is the biggest Paris suburb after the city itself, wrapped by the Seine and the Bois de Boulogne, and it sits in metro fare zone 2. Its pull is narrow and specific: an unusual run of 1930s Art Deco blocks, the Albert Kahn museum and gardens, and a concert hall on the Île Seguin. Two or three hours on foot covers the core; there is no reason to move your bags here.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Metro line 9 (Pont de Sèvres, Billancourt, Marcel Sembat) and line 10 (Pont de Saint-Cloud, Jean Jaurès) do the work; the commune is in fare zone 2, so a Paris metro ticket covers it. Tram T2 stops at Parc de Saint-Cloud and Brimborion, a short walk across the river. Two free SUBB shuttle routes loop the commune and are step-free; check the current map and timetable on the council site. Walking between the museums and the riverfront is realistic; the Île Seguin is a longer haul on foot.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 20 min

Metro line 10 to Pont de Saint-Cloud, then walk across the river

Park and terraces above the Seine; pair it with the Albert Kahn gardens.

Paris 16th arrondissement and the Bois de Boulogne

go

Door to door: 15–25 min

Metro line 10 towards the city, or walk north from Porte de Saint-Cloud

The obvious half-day add-on; the Bois is the nearest green space.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Metro to a connecting line, then RER C from central Paris

A full day; go at opening to beat the palace queues.

Rueil-Malmaison

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Metro and RER A west, then bus or a long walk

Château and park; check opening days before you commit.

Sceaux

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Metro to a connecting line, then RER B south

Park and château; best in spring for the cherry blossom.

Levallois-Perret

skip

Door to door: About 45 min

Metro line 9 or 10 into Paris, then line 3

Another residential suburb; no reason to add it to a short trip.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Marcel Sembat / Pont de Sèvres

Metro line 9, the densest cluster of restaurants and shops, and the easiest place to leave from.

Pont de Saint-Cloud / Jean Jaurès

Metro line 10, quieter streets, closest to the Albert Kahn museum and the river.

Paris 16th arrondissement

Across the Bois de Boulogne; more beds, more choice, 15–25 min by metro to the sights here.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, well-off suburb; the real risks are pickpockets on metro line 9 into Paris, the Bois de Boulogne after dark, and August closures that empty the museums.
  • This is a residential, well-off suburb, not a sightseeing district: most museums close one day a week and some shut in August.
  • The Albert Kahn museum has had long renovation closures; confirm the museum and garden opening times before you cross town.
  • Metro line 10 is short and slow and ends at Pont de Saint-Cloud: check the last train if you are returning late.
  • The Bois de Boulogne after dark is not a place to wander; stay on lit paths or take the metro.

  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Marcel Sembat and the 1930s route, Pont de Saint-Cloud and Albert Kahn, Île Seguin and La Seine Musicale.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Albert Kahn museum and gardens, Musée des Années Trente, Immeuble Molitor, La Seine Musicale) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
