Simi Valley

Base here only if the Reagan Library is your reason or you want cheap beds near LA: 1 night, car needed, 45–60 min to Hollywood or Downtown LA.

Simi Valley is a suburban city in Ventura County, about 40 miles northwest of Downtown Los Angeles, best known for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the old Corriganville movie ranch. Sights are spread across the valley and the bus network is thin, so a car decides what you can actually do. Most travellers spend one night, or use it as a cheaper bed base for LA and the Ventura County coast.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the 118 Freeway (Ronald Reagan Freeway) runs the length of the valley and links to I-5, I-405 and the 210 in the east and the 23 to the 101 in the west. Simi Valley Transit buses run fixed routes with stops roughly 400–800 m apart and a flat fare per trip, exact change only, but they are slow for sightseeing. Walking is safe but distances mislead on the map; the Arroyo Simi paved path is the one good walk-or-ride corridor, about 7 miles from the Metrolink station to Madera Road.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by train; 45–90 min by car

Metrolink Ventura County Line from Simi Valley station to LA Union Station, or drive the 118 to the 101

Weekday-heavy commuter timetable: check the return train before you leave.

Ventura

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min by car

Drive the 118 to the 23 to the 101, or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Simi Valley station

Coast, mission and the Channel Islands ferry; a half-day is enough for the town.

Oxnard

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner or Coast Starlight from Simi Valley station, or drive the 101

Beaches and harbour; pairs well with a Ventura stop on the same line.

Thousand Oaks

caution

Door to door: About 25–35 min

Drive the 23 south to the 101

Suburban shopping and trails; only worth it if you are already heading that way.

Ojai

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive the 118 to the 23 to the 101, then Highway 33

Best as a half-day loop with a stop in Ventura on the way back.

Agoura Hills

caution

Door to door: About 25–35 min

Drive the 118 east to the 101

Santa Monica Mountains trailheads and Malibu access; you need a car.

Camarillo

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Simi Valley station, or drive the 101

Outlet shopping stop on the same rail line as Oxnard and Ventura.

Port Hueneme

caution

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Drive the 101 to the 1, or train to Oxnard then a short drive

Quiet harbour and beach; combine with Oxnard rather than making it the whole trip.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Erringer Road / 118 Freeway

Cluster of chain motels and the Holiday Inn Express; easiest on and off the freeway, walkable to little.

Madera Road / Cochran Street

Newer hotels, the Town Center mall and most of the sit-down restaurants; still car-first.

First Street / Town Center

Best if you want to walk to dinner and shops; Grand Vista and the open-air mall are here.

Watch out

Safety

Statistically one of the safer cities in Ventura County; the real risks are heat on the trails, rattlesnakes, and freeway driving at 70 mph in heavy traffic. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight in mall and trailhead lots.
  • Distances look small on the map and are not: check the drive before promising two sights in one morning.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F); hike early and carry more water than you think you need.
  • Rattlesnakes and ticks on the hill trails; wear long trousers and closed shoes, not sandals.
  • The Reagan Library closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day and has reduced winter hours: check before you drive out.
  • Bottle Village is a fragile landmark with limited access: check current visiting rules before going.
