Miami Beach

Stay 2–3 nights on the island itself, in South Beach if you want walkable nightlife, Mid or North Beach for cheaper rooms and quieter sand.

Miami Beach is its own city on a barrier island east of Miami, not a neighbourhood of it. The island runs about 13 km north to south and splits into three bands: South Beach (the Art Deco core, walkable, loud), Mid Beach (23rd–63rd St, resort towers, quieter) and North Beach (63rd St up, residential, best value). Winter is peak season with the highest room rates; summer is hot, wet and much cheaper. You do not need a car on the island, but you do need one to reach most of mainland Miami.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

South Beach is walkable end to end. The 100 bus runs the full length of the island and on to downtown Miami every ~12 min in the day and hourly overnight; the South Beach Local loop costs 25 cents. Bikes rent for about $8/hour or $30/day, and the Beach Walk path runs behind the sand. Taxis and rideshare are easy but surge at night. A car is a liability on the island (parking costs) but useful for mainland Miami and the Everglades.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

South Beach

5th–23rd St. Art Deco hotels, Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road, most nightlife. Walkable; noisiest and priciest. Best for a first visit and for anyone without a car.

Mid Beach

23rd–63rd St. Big resort hotels and condo towers on Collins Ave; quieter beach, 10–20 min by bus or bike from South Beach. Best for families and pool-and-beach stays.

North Beach

63rd St north. Residential, cheapest rooms, own small commercial strip; 20–30 min by bus to South Beach. Best for longer stays and budget.

Watch out

Safety

Miami Beach is heavily policed and generally safe in the tourist core; the real issues are night-time drinking crowds on Ocean Drive, petty theft from the beach and cars, and summer heat. Keep valuables out of sight on the sand and lock nothing in a parked car.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan indoor or beach time 12:00–16:00, and drink water.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; watch forecasts if travelling then.
  • Ocean Drive and Collins Ave restaurant touts: check the menu prices and any automatic service charge before sitting down.
  • Peak spring-break weeks bring heavy drinking, crowd surges and extra police; some Ocean Drive venues add cover charges.
  • Seaweed (sargassum) can pile up on the sand in summer months.
  • Parking on the island is expensive and scarce; if you rent a car, confirm the hotel's parking fee first.
