Villach is Carinthia's second city and a rail junction where lines from Vienna, Salzburg, Italy and Slovenia meet. The old centre is small and walkable; the reasons to stop are the warm lakes, the spa at Warmbad and the alpine road up Dobratsch. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a two-night base between Austria and the Adriatic.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk; local bus line 10 is said to loop the historic core (check the route). Buses to the villages leave from the Busbahnhof a few minutes from the main station. Driving is slow on weekdays: parking is scarce and charged near the centre, so leave the car at the hotel.

Watch out

Safety

Villach is safe to walk day and night, including the Hauptplatz bar streets. The real risks are mountain roads, lake ice that may not hold, and pickpockets only in festival crowds.
  • Weekday parking near the centre is paid and fills early; traffic jams at business hours are common.
  • Lake ice-skating on Faakersee, Ossiacher See and Vassacher See depends on the winter; never assume it is frozen.
  • Kirchtag in early August brings up to 50,000 (≈ US$60,000) visitors; book beds and expect crowds.
  • Sleeper trains call at Villach after midnight, so plan the arrival transfer.
