  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Winnipeg is Manitoba's capital and the largest city on the Canadian Prairies, sitting where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet at The Forks. It is a museum-and-architecture city with a compact, walkable downtown core, a strong food scene and some of the coldest big-city winters in North America (lowest temps for cities >100k). Two nights covers the essentials; three lets you add a day trip.

Watch out

Safety

Winnipeg is generally safe for visitors who stay alert. The real risks are winter cold and windchill, mosquitoes in early summer, and specific alleys/blocks near Portage/Main that feel unsafe after dark: keep to lit main streets and take a taxi late at night.
  • Winter windchill can drop below -40 °C and exposed skin freezes in under 10 minutes: cover up and check the forecast before going out.
  • Mosquitoes are worst at dawn and dusk in early summer; pack repellent for June.
  • Some downtown blocks around Portage and Main are quiet after dark; stick to lit streets and take a taxi late at night.
  • Prices in Canada are shown before sales tax; Manitoba adds tax at the till.
