Hillsborough (often spelled Hillsboro) is a small New Hampshire town on Route 202, about 30 minutes west of Concord by car. Its draw is outdoors and small-scale: Franklin Pierce Homestead, Fox State Forest, Emerald Lake and Farrar Marsh. There is no rail station and no walkable core, so a car is required. One night covers it; two nights only if you are fishing, paddling or riding the back roads.

Getting around

Car only. Route 202 runs through town and Route 9 meets it from Keene; I-89 exit 5 is the usual approach from Concord. Many side roads are gravel or dirt and are rough in winter and the spring thaw — a four-wheel-drive vehicle helps. There is no useful local bus or train.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are rural driving (ice, deer at dusk, unlit gravel roads) and cold water on the lakes. Tell someone your route if you head into the state forest.
  • No rail or bus service into town: without a car you are stuck.
  • Gravel and dirt back roads turn icy in winter and muddy in March–April.
  • Fishing anywhere in the state needs a current New Hampshire freshwater licence.
  • Swimming is not allowed in Loon Pond — it is a drinking-water reservoir.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads; download offline maps before you leave Concord.
