Portarlington is a small County Laois town of about 9,300 people on the River Barrow, an hour by commuter train from Dublin Heuston. Its draw is Emo Court, a Gandon neo-classical mansion about 6 km away to the south-west, plus a compact market square and a Huguenot history that survives mostly in street names. Most travellers pass through on the Dublin–Galway or Dublin–Westport line; one night is enough unless you are walking the Barrow or playing golf.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable. Emo Court, Lea Castle and Derryounce Lake are 4–6 km out and need a car, bike or taxi. Trains run hourly from Dublin Heuston (about 45–60 min) and continue to Portlaoise, Tullamore and Athlone; Dublin Coach 816 and Slieve Bloom 829 serve the town.

Portarlington is a small, quiet town and feels safe by day; take the usual care on a late-night pub night out. Rural roads around it are narrow and unlit, so drive on the left and watch for walkers and cyclists after dark.
