Huejotzingo

Go for one night, or as a half-day from Puebla: the 1524 Franciscan monastery and the February carnival are the whole reason.

Huejotzingo is a small colonial town 3 km from Puebla's airport and about 40 minutes from Puebla city. Its Franciscan monastery, begun in 1524, is a UNESCO-listed site and the reason most travellers stop. Add the cider houses and the February carnival re-enactment, and one night is enough; without the carnival, a half-day from Puebla covers it.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Getting around

The colonial centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. The town spreads out toward the highway, so use taxis, peseros/combis or ride-hail apps for anything beyond the centre; taxis are plentiful and hotel desks will call one.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Bus (Estrella Roja / Super Rapidos) or taxi/ride-hail from the centre

The obvious base: go for the cathedral, Amparo Museum and food, then come back or stay.

Door to door: 2.5–3 h by bus

Bus from the Huejotzingo terminal toward TAPO, or car via the MEX-150D toll road

Too long for a day return; use it as a transfer, not a day trip.

Atlixco

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or taxi via the MEX-190 / Puebla ring road

Flower-growing town with a mild climate and a good market; pairs well with an afternoon.

Chignahuapan

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Car via the MEX-119 through Puebla

Christmas-ornament town and hot springs; too far for a comfortable return day.

Zacatlán

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Car via the MEX-119

Apple country and a dramatic canyon viewpoint; sleep one night.

Tehuacán

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car via the MEX-150D

Worth it for the mineral springs and cactus reserve, but a long half-day.

Watch out

Safety

Huejotzingo is a working small city, not a resort: stick to the centre and main roads at night, use taxis after dark, and keep normal big-city precautions with cash and phones. The main practical risks are traffic on the highway and pickpockets in a crowded carnival crowd.
  • The main church has been closed for renovation after earthquake damage — check locally before you go for the church interior; the Museum of Evangelization and monastery tours have been open.
  • Carnival weekend (February) fills every hotel and the streets; book weeks ahead or avoid those dates.
  • Some budget hotels are cash only — carry pesos.
  • Afternoon rain from May to September; plan indoor sights for the afternoon.
