  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Livermore is a Tri-Valley suburb about 48 km east of the Bay, known for its two national laboratories and a wine country along Tesla Road. Most visitors come for a half-day of tasting rooms and trails, or as a cheaper bed than San Francisco or Oakland. Downtown First Street is compact and walkable; everything else needs a car.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, wineries and parks are spread across the valley. WHEELS buses cover local routes and connect to the Dublin/Pleasanton BART stations west of town. ACE commuter rail stops in Livermore and runs to Fremont, San Jose and Stockton. Paved trails suit bikes and walkers but mostly loop the wine country rather than downtown.

Bigger downtown and shopping; easy half-day add-on.

Car via I-580 and the Bay Bridge, or WHEELS to BART then train

Do it as a day trip, not a commute: traffic decides the timing.

Del Valle Regional Park

Mines Road south from town, about 20 min by car

Lake swimming, 45 km of trails and camping; arrive early in summer.

Downtown First Street

Walk to restaurants, the Bankhead Theater and tasting rooms; the best base without a car.

Chain hotels near the San Francisco Premium Outlets; easy highway access, 10 min drive to downtown.

Tesla Road wine country

Country inns and ranch stays among the vineyards; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Livermore is a low-crime suburb and safe for visitors by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat on trails, wildfire smoke in late summer and autumn, and driving I-580 at rush hour.
  • Summer afternoons can hit 38 °C and occasionally 43 °C; hike early and carry water.
  • Downtown intersections sit at odd angles — drive slowly and watch one-way turns.
  • Tasting rooms often charge a fee and may waive it with a bottle purchase; ask before you pour.
  • Los Vaqueros watershed trails close at times for bald eagles: check before driving out.
  • Laboratory sites are working federal facilities with no public access; only the Discovery Center takes visitors.
