South Tyneside is a borough of towns at the mouth of the Tyne, 30 min by Metro from Newcastle. South Shields holds the beach, the Roman fort of Arbeia and the food street; Jarrow has Bede's monastery site. Most visitors come for a day or one night on the coast, not as a full city break.

The Metro Yellow Line runs every 10–15 min from Newcastle city centre through Hebburn, Jarrow and South Shields; reckon 30 min from the city centre. South Tyneside sits in Fare Zone C, so a one-zone ticket covers local hops but an all-zone ticket is needed from the airport or Newcastle. Local buses (Go North East) link the towns; the Shields Ferry crosses to North Shields in 7 min.
