BrownfieldBrownfield, Texas

Skip as a base: Brownfield is a 40-minute stop off US 385/82 — courthouse, heritage museum, Tex-Mex lunch — then push on to Lubbock.

Brownfield is the seat of Terry County on the Llano Estacado, a cotton-and-peanut farming town of about 9,800 people between Lubbock and the New Mexico line. There is no sightseeing circuit here: a county courthouse, a small heritage museum and a free city park with short-term camping. Treat it as a half-day leg on a West Texas drive, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. US 385, US 62/82, US 380 and Texas 137 meet here, and the courthouse, museum and motels sit 1–3 km apart with no useful bus service. Everything in town is a 5-minute drive; walking is possible only within the two-block downtown core.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are highway driving (long, straight, drowsy stretches on US 385 and US 82), summer heat and ice in winter. Keep the tank above a quarter and carry water.
  • Distances are real: Lubbock is about 70 km (43 mi), Midland–Odessa about 130 km (81 mi), and there is nothing but farmland between.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F) with no shade downtown; carry water.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the farm roads; download offline maps before leaving US 385.
  • Motel rates spike when Texas Tech in Lubbock has a home game or graduation — book ahead or sleep in Lubbock.
