Know before you go

  • The fort stands on the cliff above the Lower Town. From the Upper Town it is a short flat walk; from the bay it is a steep climb, so take a taxi up if it is hot.
  • This is where a Dutch gun salute answered a US warship in November 1776, often described as the first foreign salute to the young United States. A plaque in the fort recounts it.
  • There is almost no shade in the courtyard. Go before 10:00, wear a hat and carry water.
  • Entry is free as far as we can tell (check). Some rooms may hold government offices or be shut; do not open doors that look private.
  • The walls are old and uneven. Keep children back from the drop on the sea side.
