Kitwanga (Gitwangak) is a small Gitxsan village where the Kitwanga River meets the Skeena, on Highway 16 at the southern end of the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. It is a stop, not a base: the totem poles and the battle hill take half a day, and the nearest beds and services are in New Hazelton or Terrace. VIA Rail's Jasper–Prince Rupert train stops here on request only.

Getting around
No local transit. BC Transit's Hazeltons route links Terrace, Kitwanga and Kispiox three days a week; otherwise you need a car. VIA Rail's Jasper–Prince Rupert train stops at Kitwanga station only as a flag stop, so you must reserve in advance. Highway 37 north has no mobile coverage for long stretches.

Safety
- Kitwanga station is a flag stop: no reservation, no stop.
- Mobile coverage is patchy between Terrace and Kitwanga and absent on Highway 37 north toward Watson Lake.
- Winter driving on Highway 16 and 37 means snow, ice and long gaps between services.
- The totem poles are in a living Gitxsan village: stay on the road and trails, and ask before photographing homes or people.
- Fuel and groceries are limited here; fill up in New Hazelton or Terrace.
