- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
Beloeil sits on the west bank of the Richelieu River, facing Mont Saint-Hilaire, 36 km from Montréal. It is a residential town with a compact old core: a heritage circuit of 45 panels, two marinas, a golf club running since 1923 and a dense strip of restaurants along rue Richelieu. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop on the Richelieu Valley route or a single overnight. Two nights only if you add Mont-Saint-Hilaire hiking or the Chambly fort.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: Route 116 runs along the railway, Route 223 (Chemin du Richelieu) follows the river. The old village is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Exo's Montréal–Mont-Saint-Hilaire commuter line stops at McMasterville, about 2 km from the Beloeil core, so you still need a taxi or bus for the last leg. Bikes work well on the riverside roads.

Watch out
Safety
- Exo trains are commuter services: few off-peak and weekend departures, so check the timetable before you rely on the train.
- Restaurant terraces along rue Richelieu fill on summer weekends; reserve or eat early.
- The Richelieu River current is strong near the dams and bridges: swim only at supervised spots.
- Winter driving: Route 116 and Highway 20 ice up; snow tires are required in Québec in winter.
- Many small Beloeil businesses close one weekday; check hours before a special trip.
