Jericoacoara is a fishing village turned beach resort about 300 km west of Fortaleza, inside a national park since 2002. Streets are sand, cars are banned from the village, and the nearest paved-road town is Jijoca, roughly 25 km away. Most travellers come for 3–5 nights to kite, windsurf, walk to Pedra Furada and watch the sunset from the dune. It is reached by 4x4 transfer from Fortaleza (about 5 h) or by bus to Jijoca plus a 4x4 link.

Getting around

On foot. The village is small, sandy and car-free; a flashlight helps after dark because street lighting is restricted. For Pedra Furada, walk east along the beach at low tide (about 2 h round trip) or take the higher Serrote path. Buggy tours, 4x4 transfers and kite-school shuttles cover the lagoons and Jijoca.

Watch out

Safety

Violent crime is rare in the village and the main risk is the environment: sun, tide, rocky beach paths and no street lighting. Keep cash secure, avoid unlit beach walks alone at night, and use registered buggy drivers.
  • No ATMs in the village and card acceptance is patchy — bring reais in cash.
  • Cars cannot enter or park in the village; you leave the vehicle at the entrance lot for a fee.
  • Do not walk to Pedra Furada barefoot: rocky patches, and go with a guide or check the tide.
  • Night falls fast around 18:00 — start the return walk right after sunset.
  • Tap water and regional seasoning upset some stomachs; drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Bus and transfer times slip; leave a buffer before a Fortaleza flight.
