Sorata is a small valley town at about 2,700 m below the Cordillera Real, roughly 3–3.5 h from La Paz, and it exists for hiking. The town itself is a few market streets around a plaza; the reason to come is the trail network above it, Laguna Chillata and the longer Laguna Glaciar route. Accommodation is cheap and basic, Wi-Fi is rare, and most travellers stay 2–3 nights.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes; taxis wait near the plaza and are only worth it for trailheads or the caves. For trails, carry an offline map or GPS: paths split and people have been lost on the descent from Laguna Glaciar. OpenStreetMap-based apps cover the area.

Watch out

Safety

Sorata is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are altitude, getting lost on unmarked trails and road blockades on the La Paz route. Hike with a map or guide, and never rely on a phone signal above town.
  • Altitude: the town sits near 2,700 m and hikes climb to 4,000 m+; acclimatise in La Paz first.
  • Trails are unmarked in places and split on the way down: carry an offline map and set markers.
  • Wet season (Dec–Mar) makes trails muddy and hides the peaks.
  • Wi-Fi is rare in guesthouses; buy a Bolivian SIM or eSIM before you leave La Paz.
  • The 'tourist information' offices are tour operators and take a cut; agree the price in writing.
  • Roads to La Paz can be blocked by protests: keep a buffer day before a flight.
