Fortune

One night, and only if you are catching the Saint Pierre ferry: the town itself is a 2–3 hour stop, not a destination.

Fortune is a Burin Peninsula fishing town of about 1,400 people on Highway 220, roughly 200 km from the Trans-Canada Highway. Its real draw for travellers is the SPM Ferries terminal with sailings to Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Everything else — the geological centre, the fossil cliffs, a supermarket and a diner — fits into an afternoon. Come for the ferry, sleep one night, and treat the town as a staging post for the French islands.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Walk or drive. The town is small enough to cover on foot in 20–30 minutes, but you need a car for Fortune Head Park Reserve and for Highway 220 connections. No local bus service; Foote's Taxi runs a shuttle from St. John's (check days and times).

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are coastal weather, fog on Highway 220 and long gaps between services. Tell someone your route and carry fuel and water.
  • Ferry to Saint Pierre and Miquelon needs a passport or ID and a booked seat in summer; sailings can be cancelled by weather.
  • Cell coverage and fuel are limited outside the town; fill up before heading down the peninsula.
  • Most restaurants and shops close early and many shut out of season — check hours before you arrive.
  • Weather changes fast on the coast: fog, wind and rain even in July.
