Tumbler Ridge is a 2,000-person former coal town in the northern British Columbia foothills, 120 km southwest of Dawson Creek. It exists for travellers as a base for the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark: dinosaur trackways, Kinuseo Falls and a small museum. Sights are scattered along gravel roads, so a vehicle is required and two nights covers the core.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is at the junction of BC Highways 52 and 29, and the geopark sites, Kinuseo Falls and the trackway tours are reached by highway and gravel road. In town, two arterial roads (MacKenzie Way and Monkman Way) link the residential loops. There is no public transit; taxis are limited, so arrange lifts with your hotel (check).

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high distance: the real risks are wildlife, gravel-road driving, weather changes and no cell coverage. Tell someone your route and expected return before any backcountry drive.
  • Fuel up in Chetwynd or Dawson Creek: the local station keeps shorter hours and prices are higher.
  • Gravel logging roads are shared with trucks; drive with lights on and expect washboard and dust.
  • No cell signal on much of the Monkman and backcountry routes; carry water, food and a spare tyre.
  • Black bears and moose are common on roadsides at dawn and dusk.
  • Trackway tours run only in July and August and must be booked ahead; no booking, no tour.
