Busan is South Korea's second-largest city and its largest port, stretched along a coast of hills, bays and beaches. Jagalchi is the country's biggest seafood market, Haedong Yonggungsa is a temple built on the shoreline, and Gamcheon has terraced hillside houses. The sights are spread over several districts, so plan by neighborhood and use the metro. It works as two nights after Seoul, and as a base for Gyeongju if you want more.

Getting around

The Busan Metro (four lines) plus buses reach most sights; load a T-money or Cashbee card at any convenience store (base fare about ₩1,650, 2026 estimate, check). Taxis start around ₩4,800-5,000 and are worth it for Gamcheon and Taejongdae. The Sky Capsule and Blueline Park coastal trains along Haeundae run about ₩10,000-35,000 depending on the ride, check. KTX Seoul to Busan is about ₩60,000 one way (check).

Watch out

Safety

Busan is a low-crime city for visitors; the usual risks are crowded beaches in July, typhoon weather and steep stairs and taxis at night, so keep a normal watch on your bag in crowded markets.
  • Typhoon season (Aug-Sep) can cancel ferries and delay trains at short notice.
  • Gamcheon Culture Village is a maze of steep stairs and lanes; wear real shoes and expect crowds at midday.
  • Late July and early August are the Korean beach holidays: Haeundae is packed and hotel prices jump.
  • Jellyfish appear off Haeundae and Gwangalli in late summer; obey the posted flags and lifeguards.
  • Raw seafood at Jagalchi is priced by weight: agree the price and cooking fee before it is cut, and check the scale.
  • Book KTX seats ahead on Fridays, Sundays and holidays; standing tickets are the fallback.
