- The monument marks the 1871 canoe trip Livingstone and Stanley made together along the northern shore and the Rusizi River mouth, to settle whether the river flowed into or out of Lake Tanganyika (it flows in) — not the famous "Dr Livingstone, I presume" meeting, which happened at Ujiji in present-day Tanzania.
