Didim is a beach resort on the Southern Aegean coast, built around the sand crescent of Altınkum, with the ancient Greek sites of Didyma, Miletus and Priene within about 30 km. It is a budget, package-holiday town: most visitors come for the sea, and the ruins are usually done as one organised half-day. Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) is about an hour away, which is what turned the area into a mass-market destination from the 1980s onward.

Getting around

Dolmuşes run along the main boulevard between town and Altınkum, and out to Güllübahçe (for Priene) and Akköy/Balat (for Miletus) — but those routes radiate from Söke, so public transport between the three ruins means backtracking through Söke bus station. With a car the three sites are an easy afternoon; otherwise take an organised tour or hire a taxi for a few hours.

Yenihisar

Northern residential district, closest to the Temple of Apollo at Didyma, about 3 km north of the centre.

Akbük

Quieter bay northeast of town with resort hotels; you need a car or taxi for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Didim is a mainstream beach resort and generally safe for tourists. The usual resort cautions apply: watch drinks and bags in busy bars, agree taxi and bar prices up front, and use high-factor sun cream — the Aegean sun is strong from May to September.
  • Public transport between Priene, Miletus and Didyma is slow and indirect: plan a tour, a taxi or a car.
  • Beach-strip bars and restaurants vary in price: ask the total before you order.
  • Summer heat in July and August is intense; do ruins at opening time.
  • Check current opening hours and ticket prices on the official museum site before you go.
