Fernie is a town of about 5,200 people on the Elk River, ringed by the Rockies and 40 km west of the Crowsnest Pass. It exists for snow: Fernie Alpine Resort averages around 875 cm of snow a year, and the whole town shifts to ski mode from December to March. Summer is quieter, with hiking, biking and river fishing. Downtown is compact and walkable; the resort is a short drive up Ski Hill Road.

Getting around

Downtown is flat and walkable — most of it is within 15 minutes on foot. To the resort, use the seasonal Ferniestoke shuttle (about $4 per trip, winter only), a taxi, or hitchhiking, which is accepted here: wait at the hitching post past the bridge to West Fernie going up, and at the intersection below the resort centre coming down. BC Transit's Elk Valley route runs a few weekday trips to Sparwood and Elkford; Health Connections trips to Cranbrook run twice a week and need a reservation at least 24 hours ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Fernie is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are winter driving on Highway 3, avalanche terrain and unmarked backcountry trails, and bears in summer — carry bear spray and check conditions before you go up.
  • Winter driving on Highway 3 can be snow-covered and icy; check DriveBC before crossing the Crowsnest Pass.
  • The resort shuttle is seasonal — outside ski season you need a car, taxi or a lift.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on backcountry trails; tell someone your plan before hiking.
  • Bear country: carry bear spray on trails and store food properly at campgrounds.
