Zoetermeer
Skip Zoetermeer as a base: it is a 1970s commuter city with little old fabric. Go only for Snowworld or the videogame museum, 1 day, or sleep here if The Hague is full.
Zoetermeer grew from a 10,000-person village into a city of over 120,000 after it was designated an expansion area for The Hague in 1966, so almost everything you see is post-war. Its two real draws are Snowworld, one of Europe's largest indoor ski halls, and the Nationaal Videogame Museum. The old village core around the Dorpsstraat keeps a 16th-century church and an 1896 windmill. Most travellers pass through on the RandstadRail between The Hague and Rotterdam, or use it as a cheaper bed for The Hague.

RandstadRail light rail runs through the city and links Zoetermeer with The Hague, Rotterdam and Leidschendam; local buses fill the gaps, run by Arriva and EBS. Intercity trains do not stop at Zoetermeer, only sprinters, so change at The Hague or Gouda. Touch in and out with an OV-chipkaart or contactless bank card; buying a ticket from the bus driver costs more.

Safety
- Intercity trains skip Zoetermeer: take a sprinter or RandstadRail, or you will pass straight through.
- Zoetermeer-Oost station has poor onward connections; use Zoetermeer station or Centrum West instead.
- Open alcohol in the centre is banned and enforced; a fine is around €60 (≈ US$70).
- RandstadRail ticket machines have been coin-only at times: carry coins or a topped-up card, or find the conductor.
- The videogame museum has moved to a temporary site and plans another move in 2026: check before you go.
