San Agustin is a small Huila town beside a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of pre-Columbian statues, carved rocks and burial mounds scattered over a wide area. The town itself is one street grid of hostels, grills and tour agents; the sights are 3–20 km out, so you need a plan, a horse or a jeep. Two nights covers the main park and the walkable sites; three nights adds Alto de los Idolos and the Isnos waterfalls.

Getting around
The town is walkable. The archaeological park is 3 km west: frequent minibuses and carros run from the centre, or walk it in about 45 min. El Tablon, La Chaquira, La Pelota and El Purutal are within walking distance of each other on one loop. Alto de los Idolos, Obando and the Isnos waterfalls need a jeep tour, a hired carro or a horse; public transport only reaches San Jose de Isnos, not the sites themselves.

Watch out
Safety
- Set up jeep tours through your hostel: some roadside agents have a record of taking belongings.
- If you travel on to Popayan, Tierradentro or Mocoa, do not move at night.
- The Popayan road is partly unpaved through Puracé National Park and very bumpy: 5–6 h, not the 3 h the map suggests.
- Trails to La Chaquira and the outlying sites are unmarked in places and slippery after rain; go with someone who knows the route or a GPS track.
- Park tickets are checked at the gate: keep yours, the combined ticket covers several days.
