Liberia is Guanacaste's provincial capital and the airport gateway to the Pacific beaches, not a destination in itself. The town is walkable and cheap for a night, with a colonial-era centre, a cowboy museum and sodas around the plaza. Most travellers land at LIR, spend one night or none, then move to Playas del Coco, Tamarindo or the Papagayo resorts. Rincon de la Vieja volcano is the one real day trip from here.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk; everything around the plaza is within 15 minutes on foot. Local buses and taxis cover the airport and outlying hotels. For the beaches and the volcano you need a car, a shuttle or a tour pickup.

Safety

Liberia is a working provincial town and generally calm; the real risks are heat, unlit roads at night and rental-car paperwork. Use registered taxis after dark and keep bags out of sight in the car.
  • Rental-car deposits of US$1,000-5,000 are blocked on a credit card if you decline the rental company's collision cover - check your limit.
  • Afternoon downpours in the green season; roads to the volcano and beaches can flood.
  • There is an international departure tax at LIR; paying by card can post as a cash advance with extra fees.
  • Sodas and small shops are cash-first; carry colones for the day.
