Seaside HeightsSeaside Heights, New Jersey

Go for 1–2 nights in Jul–Aug for the boardwalk and beach; skip as a base if you want quiet — it is loud, seasonal and car-dependent.

Seaside Heights is a barrier-island beach town of about 2,900 residents on the Jersey Shore, about 80 miles by road south of New York City and about 65 miles by road from Philadelphia. It is a boardwalk-and-beach destination: Casino Pier rides, arcades, pizza slices and a wide public beach. Almost everything is walkable within 0.8 square miles, but the town is seasonal — many businesses close from October to April — and summer traffic on Route 37 is heavy. One or two nights covers it; a week suits families who want beach days.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Walk or bike: the borough is 0.8 sq mi and the boardwalk is the main artery. A boardwalk tramcar runs in season. Metered parking costs about $1–2 per hour April–October; free parking at Grant Ave at the town entrance, but a 4-block walk to the boardwalk. Taxis are mostly used at night; NJ Transit buses serve the area seasonally.

Watch out

Safety

A busy seasonal beach town; the real risks are rip currents, summer traffic and late-night boardwalk crowds. Swim only between lifeguard flags, and keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
  • Summer traffic on Route 37 and the Mathis Bridge is heavy; allow extra time on weekends.
  • Many boardwalk businesses and motels close from October to April — check before booking a shoulder-season trip.
  • Beach badges are required in season; swimming is only allowed when lifeguards are on duty.
  • Bar-heavy boardwalk at night; keep an eye on drinks and belongings in crowds.
