Santa Ana

Give Santa Ana one night for the downtown art district and Mexican food, or skip it as a base and sleep in Anaheim or Irvine with a car.

Santa Ana is the seat of Orange County and its most Mexican city: a compact downtown of galleries, a food hall and taquerias, plus the Bowers Museum and a zoo. It is not a beach town and not a theme-park town. Most visitors come for one evening downtown, or use it as a cheaper bed with a car for Disneyland and the coast.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Orange County is car country: rent a car unless you stay downtown. OCTA buses cover the county for about $5 a day (check). A free trolley loops downtown on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner stop at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, 1000 E Santa Ana Blvd.

Chain hotels near South Coast Plaza and the airport; needs a car or rideshare.

Near SNA airport

Cheapest beds and easy flights; nothing to walk to.

Watch out

Safety

Central Santa Ana is busy and generally fine by day; the real cautions are walking alone at night in Logan and French Park, Santiago Park after dark, and relying on buses after the last train.
  • Do not rely on buses to reach the airport: there is no direct bus from the Santa Ana train station to SNA.
  • Avoid walking alone at night in the Logan and French Park areas, and stay out of Santiago Park after dark.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are not final.
  • Summer afternoons inland run hot; plan indoor sights at midday.
