Odessa, TexasOdessa

Give Odessa one night, two at most: the museums and the Globe are a half-day, and Midland holds most of the rest. Come for a Permian High football Friday or a concert, not as a base.

Odessa is an oil-and-gas town of about 100,000 on Interstate 20 in West Texas, 20 miles west of Midland and 350 miles west of Dallas. It is the birthplace of the Friday Night Lights story, and its sights — a presidential museum, an art museum, a Stonehenge replica, a Globe Theatre copy — are spread along University Boulevard and downtown. Almost everything needs a car. One night covers it; two if you add the meteor crater and Monahans.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights sit 3–6 miles apart and sidewalks are patchy. EZRider runs the shared Odessa–Midland bus system, six routes in Odessa, roughly hourly, Monday–Saturday daytime only. Taxis and rideshare exist but wait times are long at night.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Odessa Meteor Crater

go

Door to door: About 30 min

I-20 exit 108, then about 3 miles south on signed ranch roads

Free, self-guided; a shallow 550-ft crater, not a canyon. Short stop, no shade.

Door to door: About 25 min

I-20 east, about 20 miles

Most of the region's museums and the better restaurant choice are here.

Monahans Sandhills State Park

go

Door to door: About 1 h

I-20 west to Monahans, then park entrance

Sand dunes you can walk or slide on; go early or late, not at midday.

Big Bend National Park

overnight

Door to door: 4–4.5 h

US 385 south via Fort Stockton and Marathon

Far too long for a day return; plan at least two nights there.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

JBS Parkway / Loop 338 (north Odessa)

Hotel strip near the airport road and Music City Mall; easiest for a car-based one-night stop.

Downtown Odessa

Ector Theater and the White-Pool House; few beds, so most visitors sleep on JBS Parkway instead.

Midland side

If your trip is mostly Midland, sleep there: 20–25 min drive each way.

Watch out

Safety

Odessa is a normal West Texas city with a rough edge: property crime is above the US average, so lock the car and don't leave bags visible. The bigger practical risks are heat, long empty drives and alcohol after dark downtown.
  • Summer heat: 100°F/38°C (100°F) afternoons are normal Jun–Aug; carry water.
  • Distances are big — Dallas is about 350 miles, El Paso about 250 miles, Big Bend about 250 miles.
  • Some museums keep short or seasonal hours: check before driving out.
  • Oil-boom traffic on I-20 and Loop 338; dust storms cut visibility in spring.
