  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arvada is a residential suburb 7 mi (11 km) northwest of downtown Denver, built on the 1850 Ralston Creek gold find and the 1870 railroad. Its draw is compact Olde Town — shops, brewpubs, a winery — plus two national wildlife refuges and a small car museum. Most visitors come for an afternoon from Denver, not as a base.

Getting around

The RTD G commuter rail line links Olde Town Arvada to Denver Union Station in about 20 min and stops at Arvada Gold Strike, Olde Town, Arvada Ridge and Wheat Ridge Ward. RTD buses 28, 32, 51, 52, 72, 76 and 100 fill gaps. Streets run east–west as numbered avenues (W 48th to W 96th) and north–south as alphabetically named streets — useful for addresses. A car helps for the refuges, golf and the Cussler Museum.

Watch out

Safety

Arvada is a low-crime suburb and safe by day and evening. The real risks are altitude on arrival, summer hail and lightning, and unlit stretches of the refuge trails — carry water, start early, and use the G line after dark rather than walking the highways.
  • Arvada is a suburb: sights are spread over 10+ mi and sidewalks thin out away from Olde Town — plan on the G line or a car.
  • Summer afternoons bring fast thunderstorms and hail; start refuge and golf outings in the morning.
  • Altitude is about 5,300 ft (1,615 m): expect breathlessness and headaches for the first day or two, and drink more water than usual.
  • Rocky Flats is a former nuclear weapons site; stay on marked trails and check the refuge site before you go.
