Bremerton is the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula and the fastest way to reach it is the 60-minute Washington State Ferries run from downtown Seattle. Downtown holds three museums in one block plus the destroyer USS Turner Joy, all within a short walk of the ferry dock. Most travellers come for a day; a night here makes sense if you are driving the peninsula or heading to Olympic National Park.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: ferry dock to USS Turner Joy is about 5 minutes on the boardwalk. Kitsap Transit buses cover the city and link Silverdale, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island and Port Orchard; the passenger-only foot ferry runs to Port Orchard and Annapolis. A car is needed for Illahee State Park, Green Mountain and the golf courses.

Safety

Bremerton is a low-risk small city; the practical issues are rain, dark winter afternoons and a quiet downtown after the last ferry. Standard US city precautions apply around the Wheaton Way strip at night.
  • Ferry queues for cars fill on Friday afternoons and summer weekends: walk on, or book a vehicle spot ahead.
  • Keep 500 ft (about 150 m) clear of US Navy vessels and facilities by boat; the shipyard area is not open to visitors.
  • Winter is wet and dark by late afternoon; the destroyer tour and parks are best in daylight.
  • Downtown thins out after the last evening ferry; check restaurant closing times before a late dinner.
