Olalla is a rural valley on Colvos Passage, 15–20 minutes by car from Gig Harbor and about 25 minutes from the Southworth ferry. There is a sandy beach at Anderson Point, 635 acres of forest at Banner Forest, a market with a deck over the water and a handful of barns along Olalla Valley Road. Lodging is two small properties; most travellers sleep in Gig Harbor or Port Orchard and drive over. Two to four hours covers it.

Getting around

You need a car. Olalla Valley Road and Banner Road are the two main routes, both reached from the Southworth ferry terminal or from Gig Harbor over the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Kitsap Transit buses run through the area and connect at ferry terminals, but service is thin and slow for sightseeing. Country roads are hilly, twisty and popular with cyclists and horse riders: pass with room.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are wet, twisty country roads, tidal mud at the boat ramp, and break-ins at trailhead car parks — lock the car and take valuables with you.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car at the Anderson Point trailhead.
  • The Olalla boat ramp sits in a tidal estuary: at extreme low tide it is a wide mud flat, and a bridge past the ramp blocks sailboats and tall masts.
  • Summer and holiday ferry lines at Southworth get long; avoid Friday and Sunday late afternoons and the Seattle-bound commute.
  • Drivers must watch for horseback riders on the shoulder of country roads.
  • Shells and driftwood on the beach are part of the natural environment — leave them; take only artificial items such as beach glass.
  • Keep well away from seals, nesting birds and other shore animals.
