Marbella is a Costa del Sol resort where the old town (Casco Antiguo) and the 6 km beach promenade do the work; the famous nightlife and upmarket shopping sit 7 km west in Puerto Banús. Most visitors come for sun, sand and food rather than sights, and a car only pays off for day trips inland or along the coast.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable; sidewalks are narrow, so watch your step. Seven local bus lines cover the town and coast (single ticket about €1.18 from the driver, check). Taxis: agree the fare before a longer ride. A car helps for inland or far-coast days; parking houses exist in Marbella and Puerto Banús.

Watch out

Safety

Marbella is a clean, busy resort and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are summer heat, narrow sidewalks, petty theft in crowded bars and unlicensed taxis. Use 112 for any emergency.
  • Summer daytime highs above 30 °C are normal: carry water and use sunscreen.
  • Sidewalks are often very narrow, and scooters use them.
  • Agree taxi fares in advance for longer trips; licensed rates should be displayed inside the cab.
  • Puerto Banús market stalls often sell counterfeit branded goods.
