San Sebastián del Oeste
Go for 1 night, 2 at most: a 630-person Pueblo Mágico at 1,480 m, 90 min by car from Puerto Vallarta. Skip it as a day trip.
San Sebastián del Oeste is a former gold and silver town in the mountains of western Jalisco, settled in 1605 and designated a Pueblo Mágico. The mines closed in the 1910s and the population fell from about 20,000 to roughly 630 in 2020, which is why the cobblestone streets and tile-roofed houses are intact and quiet. You come for the cool air, the walking, the raicilla and two days of doing very little.

Getting around
The town is compact and walkable; the main sights sit within a 10-minute walk of the plaza. Marked hiking trails leave town for the mirador and the old mine. A few taxis wait at the zócalo and hotels call one for you. Uber and ride-hail apps do not serve the town.

Safety
- The road from Puerto Vallarta is paved and modern but twisty over mountain passes: drive it in daylight, not after dark.
- Cell signal is often 3G and drops outside town; download offline maps before you leave the coast.
- The Santa Gertrudis mine is an unlit hole in the hillside with no tours, railings or staff: do not enter without a flashlight and a second person.
- Nights at 1,480 m are cold from November to February; many rooms have no heating.
- Bring cash. Card acceptance is patchy outside the larger hotels.
