Leicester is a compact East Midlands city where the whole centre is walkable: a medieval cathedral with a king buried under the floor, a Roman wall, a timber-framed guildhall and one of Britain's best South Asian food strips, all within about 20 minutes on foot. Trains from London take an hour, so it works as a day trip or a two-night base for the county.

Getting around

Walk: nearly all central sights sit inside a 20-minute radius. First Bus Leicester runs about a dozen city routes; Arriva and Centrebus cover the county, and tickets are not interchangeable between companies. A Flexi Day ticket for all buses is £6.20 adult, £4.30 child, bought on the bus. Park & Ride runs Monday–Saturday from Meynells Gorse (A47), Birstall (A6) and Enderby (M1). Cycling is mostly on-road; National Cycle Route 6 crosses the city north–south.

Safety

Leicester is a normal, safe British city by day; the centre is busy and well lit. Take the usual care at night around the station and Belgrave Road, keep bags zipped in crowds, and use 999 only for emergencies.
  • Highcross shopping centre is partly closed for rebuilding in 2026: check before planning a shopping stop.
  • Leicester International Music Festival is cancelled for 2026; lunchtime concerts move to Hansom Hall.
  • Some museums open only on school-holiday Mondays or a few days a week: check each site before you go.
  • Match days at King Power Stadium and Welford Road fill trains and pubs: book beds early.
