  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Costa Mesa is a suburban Orange County city of about 110,000 people, built around shopping, performing arts and restaurants rather than landmarks. It sits next to John Wayne Airport (SNA) and 15–25 minutes from Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter bed base for Disneyland, the coast and South Coast Plaza, not as a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: blocks are long and sights are spread out. OCTA buses run along Bristol St, Harbor Blvd and Newport Blvd, with many routes serving South Coast Plaza. Rideshares cover short hops; walking between neighbourhoods is slow.

Day-trips

Beach, pier and ferry to Balboa Island; parking fills by 10:00 in summer.

Huntington Beach

go

Car on I-405 north then CA-39 south

Wider sand and a surf pier; good sunset stop.

Door to door: 1–1.5 h by car, 1.5–2 h by train

Car on I-405 north, or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Santa Ana

Traffic can double the drive; a full day minimum.

Santa Ana

go

Door to door: 10–15 min

Car or OCTA bus on Bristol St

Downtown arts district and the Bowers Museum.

Irvine

go

Door to door: 10–15 min

Car on I-405 south

Spectrum Center shopping and the Great Park.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

South Coast Plaza / Avenue of the Arts

Walk to the mall, Segerstrom Center and the Noguchi garden; the Westin, Marriott and Hilton cluster here. Best for shopping and shows.

Near SNA airport (Newport Blvd / Bristol St)

5–10 min to the terminal, mid-range chains and free shuttles; best for one-night stops and early flights.

Eastside / 17th Street

Cheaper motels and local restaurants, 10 min from the coast; a car helps.

Westside

Industrial and lower-cost; fine for a budget bed if you drive, less pleasant on foot at night.

Watch out

Safety

Generally a safe suburban city; the real risks are freeway traffic, long unlit blocks at night and petty theft from cars. The Westside and streets near the Santa Ana border see more panhandling — park in lit lots and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Blocks are unusually long — 2500 to 2600 Fairview Rd is about 500 m with three intersections between. Do not walk what looks like one block.
  • Freeway traffic on I-405 and CA-55 peaks 07:00–09:30 and 15:30–18:30; add 20–30 min to any drive then.
  • The Westside and streets near the Santa Ana border see more panhandling and petty crime at night; park in lit lots.
  • Hotel parking and resort fees add US$20–40 a night on top of the room rate — read the total before booking.
