Maldon is a small Essex estuary town, population about 14,000, at the mouth of the River Blackwater. It is known for sea salt made here since the 19th century, for the restored Thames sailing barges moored at The Hythe, and for a High Street of independent shops. It has no railway station, so it works as a day trip from Chelmsford, Colchester or Southend rather than a place to base a whole trip.

Getting around

The town centre is small and flat: walk it. Buses link Maldon with Chelmsford, Witham, Colchester and Burnham-on-Crouch, but services thin out in the evening. National Cycle Route 1 passes through town. A car helps for the Dengie Peninsula and Heybridge Basin.

Watch out

Safety

Maldon is one of the quieter Essex towns and the centre feels safe by day and early evening. The real issues are unlit side streets after 01:00, north-west Heybridge at night, and early last buses.
  • No railway station: the nearest useful stations are Chelmsford and Witham, both reached by bus.
  • Some streetlights are switched off between 01:00 and 05:00; the High Street stays lit.
  • Parts of north-west Heybridge are best avoided on foot after dark.
  • Buses back to Chelmsford and Witham stop early in the evening: check the last departure before you go out.
  • Estuary mud is soft and tidal: stay on marked paths and never walk out onto the flats.
