Use this as a one-night stop on the drive to Cape Breton, not a destination: the causeway, a museum and a lighthouse fill half a day.
Port Hawkesbury and Port Hastings sit at the Canso Causeway, the road and rail link between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. Almost everyone passing between the two crosses here. The towns are service stops: motels, gas, food and a visitor centre at the traffic circle. Give them one night on the way in or out, or skip them if you are short on time.
