Thompson is northern Manitoba's service hub, about 13,000 people, built around a nickel mine from 1957. It is not a sightseeing town: the draw is the Spirit Way walkway with its wolf statues and murals, the Heritage North Museum, and its role as the last real stop before Churchill by train or the end of Highway 6 by car. Most travellers pass through in a night.

Getting around

The town is spread out and there is no city bus network worth relying on: taxis (Driftwood-Nickel City, North Star, Thompson Cabs) or a rental car. Spirit Way is a walking and driving route, not a single path. A car makes Pisew Falls and the airport practical.

Watch out

Safety

Thompson is a working northern town, not a resort: violent crime rates run above the Canadian average, so walk main streets after dark and keep valuables out of sight. The bigger practical risk is winter cold and long distances between services.
  • Winter is extreme: −20s °C and below from Dec to Feb; rent a car with a block heater if you drive.
  • Distances are long: Winnipeg is 761 km south on Highway 6, Churchill 16 h by train.
  • VIA Rail runs only two days a week to Winnipeg and Churchill (check the current timetable before booking).
  • Some downtown blocks are rough after dark; keep to lit main streets.
